When you can establish what is causing your discontentment, you can devise a way of getting yourself out of it.

This list is Practical things you can do to help you get out of a rut.

1.Positive Affirmation

Affirmation empowers and motivates you to change your negative thought process into a positive one. It will also help you to focus and act to achieve your goals.

Reciting positive affirmation helps to break racing and negative thoughts. As a Christian, I read my bible and look for stories that align with my current struggle. I recite verses that will help counteract my negative feelings.

By affirming positively, it will sway your subconscious mind to access new beliefs.

So, embrace the belief system that you find helpful. What works for one person may not work for the others. Go ahead and try new things; you never know what will do the trick. With new found ideas that work, your self -confidence is more likely to increase.

2.Prioritise Your Task

Prioritising your task will help alleviate stress and reduce procrastination. You are more likely to feel motivated if you use a checklist like me.

You are probably doing too much!!

Find ways to prioritise tasks, delegate if you have support available. We are in a time where we can hire a virtual assistant to support our task. So, don’t shy away from it. There are apps like Upwork, Fiverr, where you can find freelance service for your task.

As a wife and mother of 2 with a full-time job, blogger and entrepreneur, I have learnt to compartmentalize my task. I block out time for family and work.

Another hack is writing down the top priority tasks of the day and work through it.

3. Practise self-care


If you are a subscriber of my blog, you will know I’m big on this. Your self- care is everything. This is my goto when i’m completely exhausted mentally and physically.

Find something you enjoy doing. You need an outlet when you are in a rut. You need to get rid of the negative energy.

Go for a walk, listen to your favourite music, Have a warm bath, journal about how you feel now. The list is endless. Check out my post on self-care for more tips.

The last paragraph was about prioritising the most important thing you need to do for the day. Then, take one task at a time. Don’t try to rush everything; otherwise, you will become overwhelmed. Take mini-breaks to reset your mind; this will help boost your productivity. Don’t beat yourself If you were unable to complete set tasks. The ultimate goal is to get out of your rut gradually without completely letting go of your responsibilities.

5.Be Kind To Yourself

The most important relationship you will have is the one you have with yourself. So, have compassion and grace with yourself. Just you are understanding and patience with others.Do the same to yourself.

You are a diamond in the making. you may be feeling rough at the moment, just hang in there. everything will fall into place and you will come out brighter and wiser.

6.Seeking Help From Others

There is nothing like bearing it all out to the trusted people in your life who won’t judge you. Sometimes, to get out of a rut, we need others to help us see things from a different perspective; if not, there is a tendency of ruminating without answers due to clouded judgement.

Who you go to matters when you are going through a rough patch. Don’t go to someone who will make you sink further into your rut or introduce you to something that will solve the issue superficially and not dealing with the root cause.

For example, If you are dealing with depression and speak to a friend about it, they advise is to turn to drink alcohol. This will only provide temporary relief. Seek professional support in this instant to help deal with the cause.


How to Get of A Rut

Practising Solitude allows you to recharge. This helps your brain to process your emotions and addressing issues that surface instead of brushing them away.

When you do this, you can relearn who you are and present your ideas from a place of understanding and fullness.

2020/21 was hard for all of us, where we were forced to face some of the issues that we struggled to deal with.

So, schedule intermittent solitude times to help recoup your mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual function of day to day lives.

8.Using Your Emotion As Data

To get out of a rut. Get curious about your situation. Using your emotion as data helps you to analyse and unpack your feelings . This makes you an active participant in what you are experiencing.

Don't give up!


Practising gratitude generates positive emotions and helps you appreciate how far you have come. It opens your eyes to what is going well and also reminds you of the adversities you have pulled through in the past.

Gratitude inspires and can change your life immensely because it causes you to pay attention to things you take for granted.

Like one of my favourite hymns says, count your blessings, name them one by one. So, wherever you find yourself today, ask yourself what one thing I am grateful for and dwell on it is.

My Mantra is this too shall pass. So, remember, your rut is temporal and only for a moment. Avoid making a permeant decision when you are in it.



Stop and notice if you are getting self-absorbed or self ruminating about a particular issue. A good thing to do when you are in a rut is to stop focusing on yourself. Engage and help others.

Volunteering will help divert attention to others, which may help reduce your stress and anxiety. Studies show people mood improve when they work with pet and animals. So, if you are an animal lover and you have time on your hand, give it a go.
